The idea for the Festival was born from our passion for the Pallars Sobirà, a remote territory of the Pyrenees, for its stories and legends, and for cinema. The desire to preserve the most mysterious heritage of this wild land evolved into the Tabaca Film Fest – the Mythological Film Festival of the Pyrenees, now celebrating its third edition.

This is a land rich in its own myths and legends, yet every corner of the world has its own Yeti, its own mermaid, its own werewolf, its own mountain guardian, its own mythological legacy.

With the Tabaca Film Fest, we bring these stories from the Pallars, the Pyrenees and around the world into the spotlight through the artistic form we know best: cinema.

We believe this Festival can embody values we deeply care about: quality cinema and the preservation of mythological and historical memory, within an extraordinary natural setting.

The third edition of Tabaca Film Fest will take place in person in Gerri de la Sal from September 18 to 27, 2026. The Festival will include an opening ceremony, screenings of the finalist films, and a closing ceremony with an awards presentation. In parallel, lectures, guided tours, workshops, concerts and other mythology-related cultural activities will be offered.

THE MYTHOLOGICAL FILM FESTIVAL OF THE PYRENNEES - Call Open

Entry fees 1 €

The Tabaca Film Fest – the Mythological Film Festival of the Pyrenees – was born from our passion for the Pallars Sobirà, a remote territory of the Pyrenees, for its stories and legends, and for cinema. A land of mountains, passages and natural borders, where ancestral tales still survive within the collective memory.

We are a festival dedicated to filmmakers who explore myth in its broadest sense: those who question origins, beliefs, fears, invisible forces, transmitted stories, archaic figures and popular imaginaries.

Myth flows through many genres: fantasy, horror, folk horror, science fiction, mystery, historical cinema, epic drama, road movie, western, nature cinema, ethnographic, spiritual and philosophical cinema. Myth often emerges where we least expect it.

Every territory has its own Yeti, its own mermaid, its own werewolf, its own mountain guardian. The Pyrenees, like the Alps, the Cévennes, Brittany, the Massif Central and rural landscapes around the world, are crossed by powerful creatures, beliefs and stories.

Beyond our general awards, we place special importance on the Gea Award (€1,000 and Festival trophy), for the best international short film inspired by mythologies from all corners of the world, and the Biterna Award (€1,000 and Festival trophy), for the best international short film inspired by mythological characters or places of the Pyrenees, or incorporating local dialectal, linguistic or identity features.

These awards are a direct invitation to international filmmakers — and especially to creators from the Pyrenean territories and border regions — to revive, reinvent and connect mountain mythologies, borderland stories and shared imaginaries.

Tabaca Film Fest is an international short film festival of fiction, animation, documentary and video-dance. We seek inhabited, sensitive and daring films, driven by a strong vision, capable of making the fantastic emerge from reality.

The third edition will take place in person in Gerri de la Sal (Catalan Pyrenees) from September 18 to 27, 2026, and will include an opening ceremony, public screenings of the finalist films, and a closing ceremony with the awards presentation.

Specific criteria

All submitted short films must be inspired by the mythological world in its broadest sense: myths, legends, folklore, fables, superstitions, omens, traditions, tales, family stories or local memories.

Contemporary reinterpretations of these ancestral myths are welcome, whether in the form of fiction, documentary, animation or video-dance.

We also consider as mythological the great universal narrative structures: the hero, the monster, metamorphosis, the riddle, the quest, the labyrinth, the border, initiation. Timeless stories that continue to resonate in today’s cinema.
